CWD Glossary of Terms

County Alphabetical listing of Wisconsin counties from which testable deer tissue samples have been collected.
CWD Year A hunting year, typically starting on April 1 of a calendar year and running through March 31 of the following year. For example, CWD year 2003 is from 4/1/2003-3/31/2004.
Deer Management Unit (DMU) DMUs are designated areas of similar land use bounded by major roads or rivers. Deer populations are surveyed and monitored annually in each unit to help maintain a healthy deer herd.
Period The season in which the deer was shot and tissue samples were collected.
# Sampled Indicates the total number of deer in specific area from which tissue samples were collected during a specific period.
# Analyzed Number of samples which have been analyzed by a laboratory. Some tissue samples may have been inadequate (due to gunshot or other damage to the head, deterioration of the tissue due to a prolonged interval between harvesting of deer and collecting of tissue and testing, or inappropriate tissues were collected) for analysis.
Positive for CWD Number of deer to date for specific location and period that have tested positive for CWD prions in the collected tissue.
Staging Estimating the extent of CWD disease progression, based on severity of PrPCWD accumulation (determined by immunohistochemistry) in the obex portion of the brainstem.
IHC - Disease Staging
**Obex not available or not suitable for IHC
0No staining
1Neurons staining, but involving less than 50% of the entire vagus nucleus
2Entire vagus nucleus staining, but no other areas of the obex section
3Entire vagus nucleus staining and stain spilled out into other areas
4Entire obex section staining
CWD Sampling Bar Code # A bar code number is assigned to each deer submitted by a hunter. It appears on the round metal tag attached to the deer carcass and on all associated paper work. This bar code number allows the sample to be easily tracked throughout the entire testing and result reporting process.
DNR Customer # This is the nine-digit DNR Customer Identification number printed on each hunting license.
Landowner Permit # The landowner permit number, for example EZ00001. A permit number is assigned to each landowner who receives a landowner's permit within the CWD Eradication Zone. (Used in the 2002-2007 CWD years). This identification number is printed on the landowner's permit and each backtag that the landowner issues to an agent hunting on his or her property. This permit allows the landowner and their agents, to hunt without a Wisconsin deer-hunting license on the property for which it was issued only.
Unknown Zone Information was inadequate to determine from which zone the tissue sample was taken.
Hunting Season Surveillance Samples collected anytime during the normal season (archery, early and late gun).
Eradication Zone Hunts In 2002, samples collected during the special week-long hunts in the Eradication Zone between May and September.
Intensified Surveillance In 2002, samples collected by DNR hunters during February-May.
Pre-CWD Surveillance Sampling in various parts of Wisconsin, primarily in the 1999-2001 hunting seasons. This testing identified the first 3 positive samples in early 2002.
Out of Season Surveillance Deer tested outside the normal hunting season. These include natural deaths, car kills, agricultural damage kills, kills from the DEZ hunter or landowner extended season (discontinued as of the 2008 CWD year), and other miscellaneous deer.
CWD Management Zone One zone in which all CWD regulations apply (created at the start of the 2008 CWD season).
